How MapAI compares

MapAI is a Spatial Evidence Layer. It sits alongside the GIS and AI tools you already use, and does a job none of them was built for: assembling spatial evidence you can inspect and stand behind. These pages explain where each tool fits, where it is the better choice, and where MapAI is.

The short answer

MapAI does not replace ArcGIS, QGIS or your GIS team. It is the layer between your systems of record and the decisions they inform: the place where spatial evidence is found, combined, checked and explained. If your job is to manage and map data, keep your GIS. If your job is to answer a place-based question well enough to make or recommend a decision, and to show how you got there, that is what MapAI is for.

GIS systems were built to manage and map data, not to make spatial evidence quick to assemble or easy to verify. So teams either queue for scarce GIS capacity, or work around it with evidence they cannot fully trace. MapAI adds the layer GIS was never designed to provide, and hands the result back to the GIS and the people who make the decision.

Alternative

MapAI vs ChatGPT, Copilot and other AI assistants

A general assistant can talk about a place. MapAI assembles the evidence about it and shows its working.

Alternative

MapAI vs the way it is done today

The queue for GIS capacity, the portals, the spreadsheets and the consultants. What changes, and what doesn't.

Works alongside

MapAI and ArcGIS

ArcGIS manages and maps your data. MapAI turns it, and everything around it, into evidence a planner can inspect.

Works alongside

MapAI and QGIS

QGIS stays your tool for analysis and cartography. MapAI supplies trusted data, validated methods and answers everyone can inspect.

Alternative

MapAI vs Felt

Felt is a strong place to build and share maps. MapAI is where you assemble and verify the evidence before the map.

Alternative

MapAI vs CARTO

CARTO brings spatial analysis to your data warehouse. MapAI brings validated spatial evidence to the people deciding.

How these pages are written

Dated and sourced.

Every claim about another product comes from its public documentation or pricing page, with the date we checked it. If something is out of date, tell us and we will fix it.

Honest about trade-offs.

Each page says where the other tool is the better choice. Many teams will use both, and the pages say so.

Current capabilities, stated plainly.

MapAI Explore is available in Australia and free to start. MapAI Source and the QGIS companion are planned for 2027. We don't compare features we haven't shipped.

Common questions

Does MapAI replace my GIS?

No. MapAI sits alongside GIS such as ArcGIS and QGIS. It speeds up finding, combining and analysing spatial evidence and keeps the evidence trail visible, while your GIS remains the system of record and your GIS experts validate the methods others reuse.

What is a Spatial Evidence Layer?

It is the layer between GIS systems of record and the decisions they inform: where spatial evidence is discovered, assembled, validated and explained, then delivered as answers to domain professionals or as analysis-ready data to GIS experts. MapAI is built as that layer and is vendor-neutral.

Why isn't a general AI assistant enough?

General assistants reason and write well, but they do not come with a spatial engine, curated Australian data or a repeatable method library, and they can give different answers to the same question. MapAI runs real spatial analysis, shows the datasets, assumptions and steps behind each answer, and routes common questions to validated methods.

Which tools do you not compare, and why?

We don't compare MapAI with partners. MapAI is the geospatial engine inside Urban Copilot, Archistar's planning product, so Archistar is a partner, not a competitor. Data providers such as Nearmap, Geoscape, AURIN and the ABS supply the data MapAI works with.

How current are these comparisons?

Each page shows the date its claims were checked. We review them every quarter and whenever a vendor makes a significant change. Corrections go to info@mapai.net.
